Most little girls grow up dreaming of living out a fairy tale complete with the knight in shining armor and I’m no different. Daily, I have to be “rescued”, talked down off the “cliff of doom”, saved from an overwhelmed state, or helped to battle the flower nemesis of the hour. That’s where my knight comes in. He might not be on horseback (more like a tractor), or arrive with a sword drawn (typically a shovel), but he is always there exactly when I need him. He is my rock, my loyal and trusty companion, and when all else fails me, he never does.
Most people only ever see a glimpse into this world we are creating, the beauty and the romanticism of what we do and offer. However, he is fully immersed in the muck as well as the beauty and STILL believes in our dream, even when I doubt it. Sometimes it’s hard to give credit where credit is due, but he deserves much more than I could ever give. Brian is an incredible flower farmer and all of the muscle and grunt work that goes into making this happen. I’m so lucky that it’s not just his brawny appeal that I get to benefit from; he is also ridiculously smart and skilled in horticulture. He pours himself into old horticulture textbooks in his spare time, and researches new and innovative skills and techniques we could use on the farm. Brian’s horticulture degree and background in soil and water conservation have been invaluable to the success and progress of our business, much more than my skill set for the day-to-day operations.
While still maintaining two jobs off the farm, Brian continues to put in long days in our fields, tilling out new rows, installing irrigation, repairs and maintenance, and keeping me calm and centered… that last part might be the hardest in his job description! The hours are always long, the work always grueling, and the praise few and far between, but he pushes through and is an amazing father in the midst of all of this madness. A sappy tribute to my husband? Yeah, but he deserves the glory and equal praise for the success of Harmony Harvest. I probably will never fully understand why he picked me to live out this crazy life with, but one thing I know for sure is I will never get tired of my knight rescuing me…. even if he is wearing Carhartts.
