I have been dying to write this blog, literally biting my nails in anticipation; could you tell? The past few months I have been bursting to share all the things swirling in my head and finally I get to share all of it with you. My last blog post showed some of the warrior moments we had to surpass in order to bring us here. I had to share in context, and provide the necessary background last week so that you can fully appreciate all of this with me.
New Year’s is the perfect time to roll out my vision and plan for 2017. We are all focused on goals right now but we tend to call them “resolutions” instead, making it easier to abandon them when the road gets a bit bumpy. I refuse to do that. I will call them goals. For me that word stokes a fire of stubborn determination within. Some refer to that inner fire as “Howdyshell genetics” from my family tree (thanks Grandma!). Regardless, that determined fire is fanned by my goals. I won’t stop until I accomplish what I set out to do. I am going to outline some of the biggest changes happening in the coming year.
After fielding countless requests to host a farmer/florist workshop on the farm we finally feel prepared to do it! Join us on Saturday, August 26th as we open the farm for a full day of intimate flower farming goodness. Oh, the dirt will be juicy as we focus on so many of those dug in details I spent endless time finding the answers to. Cooler comparisons, how to lay out and grow your farm blueprint, farming with kids, flower frog mechanics, hanging floral design mechanics, studio and flower shop space considerations, field harvest methods and more! Come spend a full day on the farm with us and our team as we walk you through our farm and teach you some of our hard to come by tips and tricks. We will send you home will all the tools you need to tackle your own flower dreams. Space is limited in order for us to provide a unique and intimate experience so register early. More information can be found on our website under the Workshops tab.
Looking to create with me and learn new methods? We will be offering TWO holiday workshops here on the farm: Saturday, November 25th and Saturday, December 2nd where we will construct a loose garden style centerpiece utilizing seasonal greens, berries and florals. We will also make front door wreaths that are much more than just your typical greens and we will provide tips and demonstrations on front porch/door décor and send you home with the tools to tackle your own space! Spots are limited in order for us to provide a unique and intimate experience so register early. More information can be found on our website under the Workshops tab.
Our Thursdays on the farm last season were so much fun and so popular that we wanted to expand on the concept and offer focused themed events. This year we will only open our farm up to the public on the following dates so be sure to mark your calendars!
June 18th – Senior Day: Open to all but centered around our more mature fans! The fields are open for your enjoyment and we will offer our standard amenities as well as additional activities such as flower ID games, a mini design class, video presentations, build a bud vase station, mobilized private tour options, and our hit of the season last year, the “pay it forward bouquet”. Buy one of our Signature Harmony Harvest Bouquets and receive one of equal value to give away for free! More details can be found on our Events tab.
July 16th – Kid’s Day: An open farm day that puts the spotlight on our youth! With the help of my kiddos we dreamed up a fantastically fun day on the farm for kids and adults alike! We’ve planned petting zoos and window sill gardening, fairy garden stations and flower poppers. Bring the kids and have a grand time exploring the gardens and connecting with nature. (Hey parents, bringing the kids is sure to lead to some tired and worn out kiddos afterwards…you’re welcome!) More details can be found on our Events tab.
August 20th – Wedding Event: If you’re planning your walk down the aisle or enjoy the luxurious bounty of wedding event florals you won’t want to miss this! We will be displaying different centerpiece options, floral arbors, chuppahs, hanging installations and more. Come hold and see the different types of bridal bouquets. Interested in our bulk bucket program? We will demonstrate what is included and how it can be broken down into your own designs. This is a fully interactive wedding flower idea day. More details can be found on our Events tab.
September 17th – Season Finale and Field Dinner: Come and enjoy the breathtaking beauty that the end of the season always brings. With a mini design class and bring a container design station, we will be creating interactive farm fresh experiences to help you connect with nature on a deeper level. We will finish our season in style with a fully farm fresh and locally prepared meal on the farm. More details can be found on our Events tab.
If you are one of our supporting floral designers or retail merchants, first we want to say thank you for continuing to support our family run business. We are excited about new purchase options that we will begin to offer this coming season as well as additional growing space so that we can expand our offerings to you. Look for more details regarding our new buying options, on farm design day and other B2B specifics via email.
In addition to more on farm events we are also ramping up our production. Our field crop area will take on a major addition as well as MORE HIGH TUNNEL space to grow in, expanding our flower diversity and growing season! We have recently installed new waterlines and hydrants and have new production beds being mapped at this very minute! Over the next few weeks we will begin to address our big red elephant (our bank barn) as we clear it of centuries of content and brush off the cobwebs to use it for design workshops and events. It’s all so exciting as the momentum ramps up and our business grows into 2017.
I am pleased to announce that I have once again partnered with family to acquire a second business. We have purchased the manufacturing rights and all equipment to mold, make, package, and sell all styles of metal pin frogs. We will operate this new manufacturing enterprise as Floral Genius.
Flower frogs are a floral mechanic. I fell head over heels for them while studying methods of construction with leading designers. Flower frogs allow for the depth and wild abundance synonymous with luxury garden style design. While production will happen right here on the farm of Harmony Harvest, this new enterprise will be a separate business from the farm. The production of these design gems has been at the hand of the Dorothy Biddle Company for many years and we are honored to take over the reins and continue to bring quality and innovative tools to the market for all designers. I’m so excited to see how these two very strong businesses can work together and build off of one another.
As we spend the next few months moving large machines and learning production and building a website, we will continue to share updates along the way. We hope to give everyone the tools they need to create abundant beauty. From flowers to frogs, I’ve got you covered!
I hope 2017 is THE year for all of us to resolve to doing what we aspire to achieve. I have nothing but high hopes for where this journey is leading. Let’s knock it out of the park!
